Over 160 traveled together. All of us had a historical
Mennonite connection to the region. About 100 were Canadian and about 60, from
the U.S. That distinction described more than just the side of that North American
border from which we came. For most of us from the U.S., our families had come
during the 19th century. For Ginger and me, nearly all had arrived in the U.S. by
the mid-1880s.
However, for those from Canada, the relationship to Ukraine was much closer. Some
were born in the region, and many others were descended from those who came to North
America during the 20th century; they had spoken with relatives who could tell them of
their Ukrainian experiences. There will be much more to be said later of the impact
of their experiences on us. |
