Mary and Lois are from
Steinbach, Manitoba, a village named for this Steinbach (Stony Brook). The village
is gone and across the Busuluk River, seen in the background. No bridges cross this
river for many miles. Mary tells me that one Canadian from Steinbach, Delbert Plett,
made the long trip around last spring, finding only the stones for which Steinbach was
named. We pause to eat our sack lunches amid the carpet of flowers. Our route to and from
Steinbach takes us through the village that was formerly Ebenfeld, and past fields that
have burial mounds. The farmers still plow around the mounds, many of which contain
2-m tall stone images.
