As our ship moved toward its berth in the harbor, we heard the Black Sea Fleet band providing a welcome of marches.  The buses were ready and waiting to take us for a day trip to Yalta. Sevastopol is the headquarters of the Ukrainian navy, and Russia continues to lease space in the harbor.  Until a few years ago the city was closed to visitors except under very controlled conditions.  Visitors went to Yalta and made day-trips to Sevastopol.   The name is pronounced with the emphasis on the long o of -to- : Se-vas-to'-pol.
