The Canadian Ambassador delivered a lecture on the state of Ukraine.  Giving reference to the difficulty of the transition, he described the background of the millions who died in the wars, millions who died in Stalin's policy of starvation and purges, and of the absence of their own institutions.  The ambassador noted that very few countries have gone from authoritarianism to democracy without reverting at least once, and that Ukraine must also go from a controlled economy to a free economy.  It is widely accepted that the likelihood of reversion to authoritarianism is high.  The second place candidate for president would bring back the old ways.

Traditional music troupeA troupe of   musicians, Horlytsya, gave a wonderful show of traditional music on board.  As musicians they are very accomplished with violin, dulcimer, flutes, and traditional stringed instruments.  Their singing, dancing and entertainment delighted everyone, and we brought home a CD to remember them.
