The afternoon after leaving Kherson and the Dnieper, we have time for a visit to the
ship's bridge, to be shown the operation of the ship.
This is preceded by a Black Sea lifeboat drill.
A Captain's view:
The Glushkov was built of Soviet design in the former East Germany. The ship is
powered by three 1000-hp engines plus thrusters for maneuvering. On the river it can
travel at 36 km per hour (about 18 knots). It is not designed for efficiency in the
heavier seas and only manages 25 km per hour. I believe that they said that its
draft is only about 5 meters, so it easily handles shallow rivers. |
