Dnepropetrovsk
was the nearest large city to the major Mennonite colonies, and so it had a sizable
population of Mennonites at the turn of the century. A Mennonite had been an
influential mayor. Others built a large factories. The ornamentation in the
photo was part of a hospital in which many Mennonites worked. The building is now
crumbling but was still used until recently. Other sites included:
- the building that had been the headquarters of the Board of Guardians, the structure
used by the Russian government to supervise Mennonite and other colonies;
- the hotel that was once the residence of Nestor Machno, the bandit who terrorized
Mennonites and others just after the Revolution;
- the Potemkin Palace;
- the museum that contains the Reparations Room, memorializing
those lost to Stalin's policies and purges.
